STUDIO 7

Professor Matt Hutchinson
Fall 2023

The Trent Manufacturing building in Cleveland, OH has been left abanonded and without use for years. This project reimagines the space as an office building with a programmatic twist.

01 | SITE LOCATION

Context and Culture

Just on the outskirts of downtown Cleveland, this area is left considerably barren in terms of architectural flare or attraction. The site itself sits alongside the rather busy road Carnegie Avenue, only a minute off of I-90. There are an underwhelming amount of crosswalks considering the sidewalks lining the streets.

One would call this area an industrial artifact of the rust belt, with roads lined with brick buildings and old factories. This location is an incredible opportunity to allow the glimmer of downtown to start to bleed further down, away from city center, starting with this project.

The Stage is featured with glass curtainwall system encased in a sculptural concrete facade. The tower is broken into two sections; the lower level - a conversation pit placed in the lobby, featuring an atrium that allows views out from the second floor balcony, and the upper level - a stage located front and center on the third floor event space.

North Circulation is a bit more self-explanitory, with an elevator located in its core and a spiral staircase circumnavigating its center. However, this tower showcases circular shelves made to exhibit archival media such as books, art, and sculptures. It sits alongside the structures facade, allowing viewer appreciation from both the interior and exterior of the building.

The Conference Room has a somewhat similar structure as The Stage. It is broken up into two sections; the lower level, which acts as the west entrance at the ground floor in the form of a vestibule, and the upper level, which is a conference room with an atrium that allows views from the third floor.

Central Circulation is considerably similar to North Circulation is its function and features, however one thing that separates the two is their location. Located in the core of the structure, Central Circulation features a skylight to allow natural diffused lighting to both the media archives and the area around it.

02 | MASSING AND FORM

Five Core Towers

The form of this structure was dictated by 5 essential towers that informed exterior facade details and interior walls. Each tower has its own dedicated program and individual ornament, allowing the area around them to conform to their dictation. The five towers are called as follows;

The Stage, North Circulation, The Conference Room, Central Circulation, and The Cafe.

The Cafe is somewhat its own stand-alone structure encaptured within the building. It is intended to create a connection between public and private access, allowing a flow of foot traffic between each floor level. In its center is a skylight which focuses light from the roof to the ground level, lighting archival shelves from ceiling to floor on the second and third floors.

Curvalinear and Linearity Meet

In the original Trent Manufacturing building, there were solely rigid orthagonal walls, thick glass and stone brick throughout the entire structure. With the goal of preserving as much of the original structure exterior as possible, the linearity of the original building and the curvalinearity introduced by the towers combined to create an experiential movement across threshholds.
